Christmas Commute Crisis: 6 times more flight cancelations at Heathrow

This week, Europe experienced exceptional cold weather with frustrated passengers stranded at airports.

In this post, we examine the cold weather impact on London Heathrow (LHR). We compare the airport traffic for the weekend of the 18th of December with data since September 2009.

We have used Tableau in our analysis. A snapshot of the analysis is given in this blog. To get the most of this insight and to get into the driving seat to draw your own conclusions, please email us on support@albatrosa.com and we will send you the visual analytics work package.

The average delay for arriving flights at LHR is 0.29 minutes over the studied period. This means that on average, flights arrive ahead of schedule by 0.29 minutes. The average departure delay is 32 minutes. Delay in this context is the time a flight is scheduled to leave and the time it is airborne. This means that there will always be a delay when examining outbound flights.

The freeze has had an impact on LHR with inbound flights delayed by an average of 35 minutes, and outbound flights by 73 minutes (compared to 32 minutes global average). The results are illustrated in the figure below.

Primary School Table in England

Thanks to the Guardian data blog, I recently downloaded an eye-opening data set detailing the performance of Primary schools in England. The data highlights disparities across the country and local authorities.

This week, we will look at school performance based on average point score and achievements in sciences and English. The primary school league tables are compiled from government data on 10 and 11-year-olds' test scores in English, maths and science tests. These tests - known as Sats - are taken in May each year at more than 15,000 state primaries in England.

We have used Tableau in our analysis. A snapshot of the analysis is given in this blog. To get the most of this insight and to get into the driving seat to draw your own conclusions, please email us on support@albatrosa.com and we will send you the visual analytics work package.

The average school performance by local authority is 27.98, with Richmond upon Thames the highest with 29.8 and Hackney scoring the lowest with 26.91.
